Interactive & Engaging Space

Inspired by Carnegie Mellon University museum’s exhibition Extraordinary Ordinary Things,’ we want to encourage people to take a look at their everyday objects from a new perspective and allow people to gain a new appreciation for the history and value that our objects bring us.

How might we inspire people to appreciate and regain new meaning for their everyday objects?

Building Understanding

I started with visiting the exhibition and talking with the exhibition curator to learn the goals and meaning behind the exhibition.

People found objects that relate to them personally to be more valuable. Then how do we create empathy for people to relate to more objects?

On-site Interviews

I asked what was each visitor's favorite piece and why. I realized that they resonated with artifacts that related to them personally.

People found objects that relate to them personally to be more valuable. Then how do we create empathy for people to relate to more objects?

Generative Research

We conducted generative research to learn more about people’s relationships with ordinary artifacts.

Our main takeaway from this research experiment was that people were more thoughtful when answering the last question on how they showed appreciation to a typical object. We realized it was difficult for people to put themselves in the past or future to consider regular objects in a deeper way because of how little context they had to this idea.

This information greatly informed us during our idea generation phase of which idea would make more sense in an exhibition environment and the best way to convey our opportunity statement to an audience that did not have previous knowledge to our project and might be just passing by.

If it's hard for people to imagine themselves in the past and present, what if we show the "extra-ordinariness" of objects in relatable and realistic situations.
